              Roger Sherman Elementary School

                              Spring 2014

The students at Roger Sherman have been very busy this spring. They learned the different plant parts and what a plant needs to grow. They created their own paper pots, planted seeds, and brought the pots home to watch the seeds sprout and grow into seedlings. Students established important garden rules that everyone follows while working in the garden, and learned the importance of working together.

In addition to gardening, the spring program covered health and nutrition topics including:

• The different food groups and the importance of eating a balanced diet            using MyPlate.

Vitamins and nutrients and which healthy foods contain them.

• Muscle groups and which muscles we use when we do certain stretches.

• The importance of staying hydrated, especially when exercising.

• Choosing healthy snacks over junk food.

• Food safety.
