CT FANS In Motion Kick Off

The newest 4-H afterschool program, Connecticut Fitness And Nutrition Clubs In Motion (CT FANS IM), held a kick off celebration on October 26th at Roger Sherman Elementary School in Meriden.

The children were visibly excited, as their principal, Lysette Torres, Ed.D., spoke to them about this exciting new program. Umekia Taylor, MS, RD, CD-N, Project Director, introduced program participants. In addition to several graduate students who will be working with the young students, attendees included Ana Lourdes Gómez Volek, Ph.D., Co-Project director, and Carl Maresh, Ph.D., department head, both from the NEAG School of Education Department of Kinesiology; Lisa Kraimer-Rickaby, Ph.D., Co-Project Director with the Department of Human Development and Family Studies; German Cutz, Ed.D., Co-Project Director with the Department of Extension; Wanda Hamilton, DTR, 4-H Urban Program Coordinator.

Special guests included Gregory Weidemann, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mark Benigni, Ed.D., Superintendent of the Meriden Public Schools, and Mike Rohde, Mayor of the City of Meriden.

The room grew quiet, while a surprise visitor arrived. Students sat in awe as Senator Richard Blumenthal chatted with them, sharing his enthusiasm for the health benefits of the program, emphasizing how they would have fun, while becoming more fit and healthy.

As part of the festivities, students participated in several fun physical activities with exercise consultant Katalina Riegelmann. Master Gardener, Judith Hsiang, shared tips on creating vegetable gardens. After the formal ceremony, students headed to the cafeteria for healthy snacks prepared by Chef David Hamilton.
