CT FANS In Motion Project

• Roger Sherman School Activities

Activities – Year One

Family Nights involve students and their families in fun activities that promote nutrition and fitness. The first family night at Roger Sherman School, was held on March 27th, and included a food demonstration by Chef Dave, creating vegetable quesadillas, and boot camp style fitness instruction by Katalina Riegelmann.

Mini recess sessions have been included in the program at Roger Sherman Elementary School, as a way to promote the afterschool program and family nights, all in an effort to increase health and fitness among the children and their families.

The Family Night held on April 8th, included fitness and Wii-Just Dance activities. Family Night flyers and water bottles were handed out to participants.

Students attended CT 4-H Citizenship Day, Growing Local - Thinking Global, at the State Capital. Teen mentors attended, along with Rineicha Otero, Umeika Taylor, and Wanda Hamilton.

The afterschool program began May 14th, at Roger Sherman Elementary School in Meriden. The program is held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Tuesday afternoon’s focus is on nutrition and fitness, and on Wednesdays, the students participate in a gardening program based on the Junior Master Gardener Curriculum http://www.jmgkids.us. Once the students master 12 core concepts of the program, they will become Certified Junior Master Gardeners.

The program will continue twice weekly throughout the summer. Program activities will focus on fitness, nutrition, and gardening. Raised beds have been constructed and set up at the Roger Sherman School. Students will learn to plant and maintain the gardens. Harvested vegetables will be utilized in food demonstrations, or brought home by students to prepare for meals.
